Medical Marijuana, The New Oregon Industry Medical Marijuana is becoming an Industry. It is happening all over the nation as I write. It is only a matter of time before this is recognized as an Industry here in Oregon. It is up to us to recognize this and attempt to direct this new industry in a way that will benefit Oregonians. Business as we have known it will change. In fact till now it has not really been a business other than for clinics. This is beginning to change as we are seeing in Michigan and Colorado. In these states Doctors have become aggressive and began qualifying patients for the program. This is not only lucrative for them but also increases their business by providing primary care in addition to program qualification. We are seeing this aggression beginning here in Portland. Just look at the front page of Nickel Ads, covered with Pot Leaves and Ads for clinics. However there is much more to this industry than clinics. The organizations must look ahead and prepare for the future. This future will include legitimate businesses engaged in the Medical Marijuana Industry. This is apparent with the formation of Medical Marijuana, Inc. an Oregon Corporation doing national business and now a public company trading on the market. The organization must be prepared to engage with these industries. As I see it there will always be orgs, but the focus, purpose and “market share’ will be realigned by private enterprise. Stoney Girl Gardens plans to be a part of this industry as a seed breeder. Sunny Girl Gardens just wants a piece of the dirt market and to give patients access to reasonably priced, easy to use products. Portlandsterdam University however is another deal. The idea of a centralized place all orgs, groups, scientists, growers, politicians and individuals can come together to share, learn, database and most importantly work together on research projects that would benefit everyone seems like a good one. There are many real questions that we need to answer. It will be a while before our Universities include these programs. It will take the demand for this type of education and talent from industry to bring it into national focus. There are hundreds of good ways to grow, make hash, or consume medicine, but which one is best or most practical for you? There are a lot of political views but without good information how can you make the proper decision? There are a ton of strains out there but what is their true composition and makeup? How do you know if yours is what they say it is? When can we use more than Phenotypes to breed? What types and percentages of cannabinoids are in a particular medicine that makes it work for a particular symptom? Did growing techniques help this composition? What is the business of the future? How do you do production grows geared towards the future of Production Licensure. How do you open a dispensary and first what is one? How do I corner the market with my new MMJ product? What are the requirements for working within this new industry? What about Standardization, safety, and good practices? What about testing? With all the chemicals, fertilizers, pesticides, boosters, hormones and systemic additives available how can we test for everything? These are just a few of the questions we need answered through credible research. We need this information available to the public. Now for the biggest question “Can it be done?” We have heard this from every major group we have talked with. Our answer is YES! We are pulling in some heavy weights to help. This is a shoestring op so it will take some work, however we are quickly gaining momentum. We need you to make this happen. This is about accumulating credible, reliable information and making this information available to the public as a trusted resource of professionals. As the business of Medical Marijuana evolves we want to provide a collective, intelligent, and science based recommendations to our state, and individuals wanting to enter into the market.
